How God Speaks is Important.

What if we paid attention to the creative ways God speaks to us?

What God says is powerful alone but have we considered the multiple ways God delivers the message? That alone adds curiosity and dimension to what God says to us.

This fall my preaching journey will take us to multiple Old Testament prophets and explore a theme called, “Creative Expressions: The Ways God Speaks.” The prophets remind us that God is creative in delivering the message. Sometimes God speaks through a song, a story, a warning, a question, a vision, a metaphor, or even through an uncomfortable truth.

The prophets’ message that God is speaking is also the message of the UCC denominational logo of a simple comma. A comma in a sentence guides the reader’s eyes to look for more words in the sentence, to follow until there is a period. Spiritually, the UCC comma symbolizes that God is still speaking. God speaks words of challenge when we have wandered, words of comfort when we are hurting, words of justice when others are being overlooked, and words of hope when the future seems uncertain. 

But, how does God do this speaking?

God speaks truth through a creative delivery, always new and different. 

As we listen to these ancient prophetic voices, pay attention to the creative ways God is speaking in the ancient text and how it interfaces in our present lives, our church, our community, and our world. 

And may we have the courage not only to hear, but to respond.
